S postovanjem, Dejan Subject: Ecma TC45 reports Open XML comment review is complete Dear all, The ISO/IEC standards process for Office Open XML has reached a new and significant milestone - Ecma's technical committee (TC 45) reports that it has completed the task of reviewing and responding to the more than 3,500 National Body comments submitted during the September ballot. A majority of these dispositions were published over the past few months, and have already been shared with some National Body members through the ISO/IEC Project Editor. Per ISO rules, much of the information is confidential to those actively engaged in this standards review process. However, Ecma's current status report offers a useful overview of some of the more substantive recommendations it has proposed to address National Body concerns, and steps it is taking to work with National Bodies to resolve outstanding concerns before the ballot closes in March. Additional context around the work being performed within Ecma TC45 over the past several months has also been provided in Brian Jones' (Microsoft Office Program Manager and Ecma TC45 technical liaison) blog - http://blogs.msdn.com/brian_jones/ Lastly, I'd like to call your attention to a new independent research report released last week by Burton Group analysts Peter O'Kelly and Guy Creese entitled "What's Up .Doc? ODF, Open XML and the Revolutionary Implications of XML in Productivity Applications". This is the first report I've come across that not only provides a base-level overview of the various document format standards in words we can all understand, but also offers strong analysis of both Open XML and OpenDocument Format which extends beyond the political aspects of the ISO standards effort. Some notable findings within the report: * The report underscores the rationale for multiple document standards, stating that ODF and Open XML were developed out of different design considerations and priorities and therefore are not "interchangeable." * The authors describe Open XML as "considerably more expressive" and "more eco-system and application oriented" than ODF, citing its support for custom schema and full-fidelity round-tripping of documents created in Microsoft Office applications. The report predicts both on the basis of functionality supported and a rich ecosystem, Open XML will be more successful and "more pervasive" than ODF. * Open XML adoption is projected to be widespread and swiftly fuelled by an ecosystem supporting Microsoft Office applications. In contrast, the report contends that ODF evolution will be "slow and complex", largely on account of Sun's ownership of OpenOffice.org, the primary implementation of ODF in the market. * Examination of ODF leads the authors to conclude that ODF is "insufficient for real-world enterprise requirements" and its use will be limited to scenarios where there are no requirements around complex document modeling or document fidelity with Microsoft Office applications. * Burton Group's overarching recommendation is to exploit Open XML's capabilities and use ODF "by exception rather than by default."
